Important notice
This app requires its home page to be visible on the mobile device's screen at all times when it is playing a program.
Otherwise, the gong may not be audible when the gong strikes.
This app does not require internet connection to work.
App Installation Status
Installation of Service Worker: Failed
Installation of 5 audio files: Failed
Offline functionality i.e. able to work without internet: No
Screen Wake Lock feature: No
Help
If the audio files are not fully installed, please refresh your app and try again.
When the internet connectivity is poor, it may take several more minutes. A message will be shown when loading of each audio file is completed.
Your device requires the audio files to be installed to work.
If the Service Worker technology is not supported in your browser,
the app status "Offline functionality" will not indicate "Enabled".
However your device can still run the app. The difference is that the app can be started only when your device is online.
When running a program, there is no further need for internet connectivity. Just keep the app opened at all times.
Without Service Worker installed, you will not be able to start the app successfully offline.
If the Screen Wake Lock request is not accepted, you will need to manually turn off your
device's sleep or auto screen off option for the app to continue running properly.
For a list of the devices and browsers which currently support this Screen Wake Lock API, please see FAQs section below.
It is a good practice to have the app installed on a second browser such as Samsung Internet as a backup.
Usage Tips
To allow quick access to the app, please tap "Add to Home Screen" in your
browser's menu to add the app's icon to your device's home screen.
"View Program" is useful for reviewing a program's gong schedule day by day after a program is selected, when a setting
has been changed, when some customised timings have been made to a certain course or a new work period program has been created.
"Change Program Day" allows you to change the timer's running day count to the desired course day e.g. to resume
testing or replace a device's with another one when a course is in progress.
To effect a change, play the selected program first and then change the program day. You will notice the
day counter at the bottom of the screen changing to your setting when successful.
When a Work Period program is enabled, the gong schedule will automatically change to work period program at the end of a
course schedule. On the following day, the timer will continue with daily work period program until another course
is selected and played.
To start a new course's gong schedule, play it any time in the morning of the Day 0.
The timer will continue the work period's ending program and segue into Day 0 schedule in the evening automatically.
The course program will continue thereafter until the last day of the course and start the work period program again.
When there is no work period program, the timer will stop by itself at the end of the course.
You will only need to click once for each course change.
The Daily Recurring program can be used to run special program e.g. a customised gong schedule which repeats itself daily.
The program will loop each day until you stop it.
Although the app can run offline once it is fully installed, it is essential to refresh the app once a while whenever there is internet connectivity.
Restarting the app whenever online will install the latest updates with bug fixes and general improvements automatically.
Test Mode
To speed up testing of customised gong's schedule e.g. after creating a work period program,
a test mode interface is provided.
Triple tap anywhere on the home screen to show the test mode interface.
Tap the "Help" link to get some ideas on how to fast track the schedule testing.
Use the "Silent" button to stop the gong before moving to the next timing.
Triple tap again to close the test mode interface.
Hardware Setup
To cover a large course site, the following description provides a working example.
For details on how to install an electronic gong system from scratch, please download the installation guide
here.
Hardware Requirements
Smart phone - a basic Android phone with a 3.5mm jack for audio output such as Samsung A03 or A04.
Audio cable - a 3.5mm stereo audio aux to 2 RCA L/R cable with a length of 1m or longer.
Loudspeaker - a horn loudspeaker with a rating 10W or higher and suitable for outdoor.
The number of speakers depends on the size of the course site.
Amplifier - a Public Address amplifier suitable to be on standby mode 24x7 such as TOA A-2120 with a rated output of 120 W.
The rating of the amplifier depends on the number of loudspeakers needed for the course site. For example,
for a site requiring 6 loudspeakers of 15W each, then you would need a minimum of 15W x 6 = 90W amplifier rating.
Extension cable - a power cable with surge protection.
Setup
Install the app on a smart phone.
Open the web app's secured link with a Chrome browser.
It is recommended to install the app on a second browser such as Samsung Internet to serve as a backup.
Once the app is started successfully, add the app to the home screen of your phone. This will allow you to tap the app
icon to open the app in the future.
Connect the phone to an amplifier using a RCA cable.
Connect the loudspeakers to the amplifier.
Power up the amplifier and the phone via an extension power cable.
Tap the "Play" button on the app's home screen to test the gong. The gong system is now ready to play.
Setup with Bluetooth speakers
Install the app on a smart phone as mentioned above.
Connect the phone to a portable Bluetooth speaker such as Creative MUVO Play. If need to, the MUVO Play
can be paired with another speaker to cover a larger area.
Power up the phone and speakers separately.
This Bluetooth setup is easy and fast. There is no cable to lay from loudspeakers to the amplifier.
However the speakers need to be more or less in sight with the phone and within a range of up to 100~150m to
work properly.
When 2 speakers are paired, it was observed that the audio output from the primary speaker is louder
than the secondary speaker.
FAQs
Below is a list of the frequently asked questions.
Which device and browser works well with the gong app?
The app can work with any device that supports browser. All the browsers mentioned below can
be used with phones, tablets, laptops and PC desktops that can go online.
iPhone/iPad + Safari on iOS browser (released March 2025, version 18.4 or later); does not work in standalone Home Screen Web App.
Android phone/tablet + Chrome browser (version 110 or later) or Samsung Internet
browser (version 14 or later).
Edge browser (version 90 or later).
Firefox browser (released May 2024, version 126 or later).
Opera browser (version 73 or later); Opera Mobile (version 73)
We recommend Android device with Chrome browser for best performance.
Why the gong did not sound?
There are 3 common reasons why you can't hear the gong at the set time.
1) Check the "App Installation Status" to
see if the Screen Wake Lock is enabled. If your device does not support this API, please manually
turn off your device's sleep or auto screen off option.
2) If the Screen Wake Lock is requested successfully, ensure that the app's screen is always on the screen when playing
a program. Do not turn off the screen.
3) If you are using an Android device, ensure you use one of the following recommended browsers e.g. Chrome, Edge or Opera
which supports ths API.
How do I customise the app to my centre's needs?
Tap the menu icon, go to "Settings" to set up your centre's default requirements. Once it is done,
go to "Customise Program" and customise the program that your centre offers.
Once you have customised a program, we recommend that you review the program schedule to verify that the customised
timetable agrees with what you need. If convenient, proceed to test the newly changed timetable for the affected day.
See the section "Test Mode" for details.
The latest app version is downloaded automatically whenever you start the app with the device connected to the internet.
How do I start a program on a specific day other than Day 0?
When you play a program, it will start at Day 0. To jump to a specific course day, you will need to play the required program first
and then you will be able to open the dialog box to enter the new course day when you tap "Change Program Day".
Acknowledgement
The timetables for the various basic programs were compiled with the help of Singapore and
Dhamma Malaya's teachers. All the long course timetables were provided by Dhamma Malaya's centre teacher.
Over time, feedback from centres in Bali, Chiba, Gadog, Kuantan and Singapore makes the gong app
more versatile to suit various local schedules.
Sources of gong audio files are as follows: gong A, Dhamma Malaya; gong B, Dhamma Adicca;
gong C, Pariyatti.org; gong D, Singapore.
Testing Guide
This guide recommends the following steps to speed up check and testing of the selected timer program.
•If there are customised timings set for part of the day, view
the timetable to check the timings for that day is correct.
•
Start the test starting from the wake up gong.
Change your device's system time to 1 minute before the next gong's timing.
•
Once the gong is sounded at the indicated time, you may wait for the gong to continue for its entire
duration or cut it short manually by tapping the "Silent" button.
Note that it is important to end the gong sound before proceeding to test the next timing. Otherwise the
sound may overlap and unable to hear if the later timing is working.
•Repeat the above step until you complete testing the last gong of the day.
•
After the 9 p.m. or the last gong of the day, change the device's time to 11:59 p.m.
When the clock passes midnight, check that the course day advances by 1 and the next gong timing matches the timetable.
Next, tap the "View timetable" link to check that the timetable for the new day is correct.
•Continue the above steps until you reaches the last day of the course.
•
If the Work Period program is created and enabled, continue to do the above steps for testing the work periods'
gong timings as shown in the timetable.
After the first day of the work period program, the work period program repeats itself daily.
•Once you have tested the timings from 4 a.m. wake up to 11 a.m. lunch, you can skip this block of timings for all other courses as they share the same script throughout.
•Beside the Day 0, Vipassana Day and Metta Day, the other days
of a course are the same. You can set the timer course day accordingly to verify those days with different schedule.
